The typography from Disney films were the first film font designs I was ever exposed to, although I wouldn’t have thought about the design choices, the design choices would have thought about me. Although I wouldn’t have thought about it, my developing brain subconsciously would have done.
If some of the most successful films owned radically different fonts, they would not have been regarded as one of the most successful films. The entire story, character and emotion, are told through the fonts legibility to the genre. For a kid’s film to come across scary, based on its font, it would be a disaster for the promotion of the film for example.
Science fiction films truly are based on the depths of our imaginations, they predict the future of the human race, some predictions have been right, some haven’t. How have science fiction fonts changed as technology has advanced? What did people think the future would look like based on the design of their film fonts?
Superhero films consistently follow the same plot of good defeating evil, does its typography follow a similar linear route? Are superhero film fonts predictable, just like their plots?
Since 2012, Netflix has disrupted cinema and television more and more over time, but has it disrupted the way we look at typography? Has typography been changed forever by Netflix’s existence or has it simply taken advantage of its properties and styles?
From Star Wars to Toy Story, film typography has introduced us to culturally iconic films that have filled our living rooms, bedrooms and cinemas with joy, since film began. Why do we remember them so well? Because they represent the story excellently.
All of these films are highly regarded by IMDB however, does their typography in their titles, live up to the hype the film itself creates? Does its title typography resemble and exemplify its successful story? Or does it clash, not suit its style, and generate friction?
